Welfare turned in a workmanlike performance on Saturday matching FC Cefn for long spells but in the end defensive errors and the lack of a cutting edge cost them dear.
Cefn took the lead after 15 minutes being first to the ball after a Scott Evans block. A couple of minutes later Luke Cahill fired just wide for the home team. Welfare stuck to their task well for the rest of the half and there was nothing to choose between the teams until a Cefn header rapped the post in injury time.
15 minutes into the second half Welfare failed to clear their lines with a misplaced defensive header and the Cefn forward took advantage to make it 2-0. At this point the home side were still in the game, if not creating chances, but as the half wore on Cefn started to dominate. A goal line clearance by Andy Marshall and a good stop by Scott Evans kept Welfare in the game. In the 85th minute a raking cross from Eddie Maurice-Jones found Luke Cahill at the far post but he could only drive just wide.
Welfare went further behind in the 86th minute when Scott Evans miss-kicked to present the visiting forward with an open goal but two minutes later he made amends with a top class penalty save.
