Welfare were dumped out of the League Cup on Saturday, going down 2-0 to holders Gresford Athletic. The home team capitalized on sloppy play when Welfare gave the ball away cheaply in midfield in the 15th minute and Hugh Jones drove on to finish well from the edge of the box. A header from Owen Roberts gave Gresford a two goal advantage in the 23rd minute and Welfare made little impression during the rest of the half.
A good strike from Johnny Taylor a minute into the second period showed Welfare were not out of the game but minutes later ‘keeper Scot Evans had to come to their rescue with two fine saves. For the rest of the half Welfare tried to give as good as they got against a workmanlike Gresford outfit but lacked inventiveness in midfield and rarely troubled home ‘keeper Ackerley.
